Trinity Athletics Cancels Athletic Events for Rest of Spring

Trinity Washington University has announced the cancellation of all spring athletic activities beginning Friday afternoon, March 13, 2020. The cancellation of all athletic activities, including practices, and all home and away contests ends the season for Trinity Washington’s softball team and tennis team. This is a very tough decision to make but it is the best decision during this difficult time as we aim to make sure that the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches and staff are our main priority.

Trinity Washington University Director of Athletics Monique McLean said “I am devastated for our seniors and this abrupt ending to their college careers. However, I trust that we made the right decision. This an unprecedented, challenging situation that we hope will aid the process of getting our country on the right side of this pandemic. We are extremely thankful to our student-athletes, coaches and staff for all of their hard-work and dedication this academic year.”

Coach Ratke Talks Goals and Success for Softball in Season Preview!

WASHINGTON D.C.— In only hours, Trinity Washington University’s softball team, led by head coach, Elizabeth Ratke and assistant, Myesha Green, will take the field. The women will take on host, Gallaudet University in a doubleheader at 4:30 PM and 6:30 PM. Trinity Athletics writer sat with Coach Ratke to hear her thoughts on the upcoming season. Here’s what she had to say:

Trinity Athletics (TA): Hi coach, thanks for sitting down with us today! We see that you have far more  ladies on your team than last year; all who are excited for the season. Can you tell us what your goals are for your team this season?

Coach Ratke (CR): We have a few goals for this upcoming season, but one big one is to win some games. I think this year we have some great potential for our returning players, and from new players who have come out to join our team. Our second big goal is to come together as a unit, and support each other on an off the field. I always tell the girls it’s bigger than a softball.

TA: You mentioned before that last year was about building and learning softball fundamentals. How do you think you all will transition this year? Will this season be different?

CR: Last year was my first year at Trinity, and it was a learning year for the girls and myself. This year will be different because we are building upon that foundation, and we have new players who have experience that bring in different qualities. We are ready to kick this season off with a positive fresh start!

TA: Can you talk a bit about some key factors that will bring success this season as well as key contributors to your team?

CR: We have a large roster of girls, and we need every single girl on and off the field to pick each other up during the games! This will be key because it will bring unity! Second, it will be to shake off errors when they are made during the game. [Key contributors to the team will be:]

Kelly Lee [is our] senior pitcher who is returning for her final year, and has really stepped up thus far for the team. She has taken a leadership position, and has really worked hard on her pitching skills.

Heaven Thomas [is a] catcher who has played multiple positions for us last year, but we have developed her into a catcher. She started catching last year, and really stepped into the role nicely. She is very motivated, and ready to take on the games.

Jasmine McKnight [is a] versatile player who comes with softball experience. She comes motivated, and ready to play. We are excited to see what she is going to bring to our team this season!

TA: OK! We will be looking out for them along with the rest of the team! Thank you for sitting down with us, and we wish you all a great season! Go Tigers!

Senior softball captain for the Tigers, Kelly Lee shared her thoughts on what her role will entail this year by saying that she wants “to make sure that there is always a team-oriented environment and that we form tight bonds.” Lee believes that a challenge that they must overcome to win games is communication.

The Tigers will start their season with four away games, including their debut against the Gallaudet Bison tonight. They will then take on PSU Dubois on March 15th, Cairn on March 17th, and Notre Dame of Maryland on the 19th before their first home game against Lincoln University on March 20th.

Trinity Tennis Comes Up Short Against Sweet Briar but Focuses on Positives: Game Recap & Season Preview

WASHINGTON D.C.— Trinity Washington University’s tennis team officially swung into their spring 2020 slate today at Sweet Briar College. The Tigers loss the match 0-9, but are looking at the glass half-full with this being the beginning of the season with three new players who are both freshman and new to the sport. “This match was a good experience for our tennis team; we are learning,” said Coach Thompson as he reflected over the match’s score sheet.

Sophomore, Katheryn Najarro, acted as the lone Tiger in winning at least one game over her opponent in the singles sets, 1-6. “Katheryn was barreling hard. She was the last one standing. [She was] the Tiger of the day,” said Coach Thompson.

This is only the beginning for the Trinity tennis team as they look ahead to nine more matches to round out their spring season. Following spring break, the Tigers will host Lancaster Bible College on March 16 at 3:30 PM. This will be Lancaster’s first game of the spring season coming off of only one game in the fall against Albright (W, 6-1.)

The home contest is one of the four consecutive home matches that Trinity’s tennis team will have.

With the majority of Coach Thompson’s players being either unfamiliar to college athletics or the sport of tennis, he says that his goal is to “encourage each player to work harder and improve overall performance on and off the tennis courts.” Every coach would hone in on solely winning games as their definition of success, but Coach Thompson has proven to not be “every coach.” He states that his key points for success as a team this season is first keeping “them motivated to compete and hav[ing] fun also.”

The Tigers will follow their four home-game streak up with a match at McDaniel College on March 28th at 12 PM.

On April 3 at 3 PM, they will travel to a close-by Stevenson University.

The following week, April 11, the Tigers will travel to Hollins University, which will be their second match up of the season as they will, first, host Hollins on March 20th.

The Tigers will travel to PSU Abingdon on April 13th, and conclude their season with a trip, just down the road, to Notre Dame of Maryland on April 22nd: their second and final match up of the spring season.

Nutrition and Health Seminar Keeps Trinity’s Student Athletes Informed

WASHINGTON DC— “Here’s a quote that may be cliche, but it’s important: By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail: By Benjamin Franklin,” said Chris Hays as he concluded his “Nutrition& Fitness 101” presentation to the women of Trinity Washington University.

On February 4th, Trinity Athletics presented the student body with a nutrition and fitness seminar featuring Chris Hays, head sports performance coach for men’s and women’s DI basketball program at Coppin State University located in Baltimore, Maryland. The performance coach also wears the hat of healthcare practitioner and qualified nutrition-consultant.

The seminar began with Hays sharing general but pertinent information about nutrition; going in depth about what foods to minimize and maximize in one’s daily diet. Student-Athletes in attendance included members of Trinity’s tennis, volleyball, and softball team. Hays was able to relate to the ladies by shedding light on his experience as a basketball athlete at Slippery Rock University and having to balance academics, athletics, and nutrition. He provided the students with several “health hacks” and ways to combine a nutritional diet with frugality as a college student-athlete.

At several different moments, you would’ve seen many of the ladies with their smartphones out as they captured pictures of the slides Hays presented.

Hays also delved into the fitness side of things by first engaging in Q&A about fat loss, muscle gain, and health maintenance. He was able to answer many of the student’s athletes inquiries geared towards off season training, and he provided athletes with general exercise ideas and workouts that can be done in Trinity’s gym located in the Trinity Center. He concluded his presentation with encouraging words for the student’s as they continue through and prepare for their academic and athletic seasons.
