Trinity Washington University Athletics Suspended for Spring 2021
Trinity Washington University varsity athletics have been suspended for the Spring 2021 semester. Covid-19 continues to challenge the world of intercollegiate athletics and the impact to community concerns and health and wellness are REAL. This was not an easy decision to make, but we are certain that it is the right one. Our commitment to the safety and lasting health of our students, student-athletes, staff and Trinity community is our highest priority. All aspects of campus have made sacrifices and adjusted the way they operate, this has extended to Athletics as well.
Trinity Athletics still plans to develop creative and meaningful ways to engage our student-athletes through virtual programming and other recreation opportunities. While the experience we provide will be different this semester, it will be meaningful and beneficial. We will use this semester to reconnect with alumni, provide virtual sessions and seminars related to mental health and nutrition, and highlight the academic achievements of our student-athletes.
In this time of global uncertainty, we appreciate your patience and support as we determine the best and safest path forward.
GO TIGERS!!!!

Trinity Volleyball Welcomes Six New Tigers!
WASHINGTON DC— After finishing one of their best academic semesters this past spring with a 3.25 team GPA, the Trinity Volleyball program welcomes six new faces. Amongst the newcomers are Angel Brown, Darah Colbert, Mon’ae Izzard, Camryn Matthews, Taelor Shanel-Sanders, and Kyla Sutton.
Head Coach, Shinicka Spears, is excited to welcome high academic and high characters recruits to a growing program. Coach Spears brought in a solid recruiting class last season, by adding another solid class, Director of Athletics, Monique McLean says, “the program potential is limitless.” Trinity Volleyball will return a solid sophomore class that gained valuable in-game experience this past season.
“Our newcomers will play a major part in our upcoming season,” Spears says. “I am very excited about the commitment and talent that they are bringing to the program! I look forward to connecting as a team and watching our returners guide our newcomers towards success. Preparation and commitment will be our focus for the upcoming season. We will to focus on one practice and game at a time.”
As the Tigers look forward to being on their home court again soon with much fervor, Coach Spears stresses the importance of mental health with the student-athletes during this time of uncertainty and social distancing.
“With all that has taken place in the past few months, it has been very important to focus on the mental health of the team. There has been a lot of uncertainty on a safe return to practice, team activities and competition,” Spears says. “We are doing our best to take it day by day. We have to remain positive and stay mentally and physically healthy.”
Although there will be noticeable changes within the athletics department, Trinity Athletics will provide programming to enhance the overall college experience for all students on our campus. Please join us as we welcome our incoming scholar-athletes to the Tiger family!
Trinity Soccer Welcomes Six New Faces!
WASHINGTON DC—Trinity Washington University’s Soccer team, led by head coach, Jason Gross, will be welcoming six incoming freshmen to their program for the 2020-2021 season: Melanie Alvarado, Karol Barahona-Bonilla, Heather Kierzek, Alejandra Lainez-Rodriguez, Marbella Navarrete, and Kaylyn Whiteheart. In addition to the six newcomers, the Tigers will welcome back 11 returners.
Coming off of a record setting season, with an 11% increase in win percentage, Gross and his roster of seventeen are looking forward to getting back on the field. Junior goalie Emily Andino finished the 2019-2020 season ranked # 7 in Division III for saves per game (153). Sophomore striker, Brittany Smith ranked #2 on TWU’s 2019-2020 team in most goals made in a season. While Trinity joins hundreds of NCAA Division III schools in cancelling fall sports, the team goals remain the same.
“Our focus hasn’t changed, the way we have to prepare has. The pandemic has allowed us to incorporate additional layers to our teaching and learning framework,” Gross said. “Players have been committed and engaged, and that’s all I can ask for.”
Gross plans to capitalize on this fall semester in a variety ways. He shares with us some of his expectations.
“We have very specific individual player development goals that we expect each player to reach each year; on and off of the field,” Gross said. “With games cancelled for the fall, we will use that time to continue integrating our recruiting class into our program. Integration will include team culture, academic support, community involvement and game concepts.”
When asked how he plans to utilize the momentum from the past season, Gross responded:
“I think we were in a really good position to improve our win percentage this fall, but we now have the opportunity to further strengthen our squad with the addition of another recruiting class before we have to take the field again. I’m expecting a breakout season for the program once we return to competition.”
Although there will be noticeable changes within the athletics department, Trinity Athletics will provide programming to enhance the overall college experience for all students on our campus. Please join us as we welcome our incoming scholar-athletes to the Tiger family!
The Trinity Tigers New Normal : How We Are Adjusting
WASHINGTON D.C.—-March 12th will be etched into the history of college sports forever. Around 4:00 PM, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s remaining spring sports.
Just 24 hours later, Trinity Washington University’s Athletic Director, Monique McLean released a statement declaring the cancellation of all spring athletic activities.
While the rapid spread of public health threat, Covid-19, has thrown everyone into new territories of adaptation, Trinity’s administration, faculty, and staff has made it their top priority to make sure that all students are remaining safe and in good health.
Digital conversion has been pivotal for Trinity Athletics as the Trinity Center has incorporated virtual fitness classes and student-athletes meet virtually with their teammates and athletic administration and staff.
McLean arranged virtual meetings with each Trinity sports team via Google Hangout to encourage “togetherness and sisterhood,” she says. “Each team is given an hour to check in on their overall well-being, family life and ways to cope during these unprecedented times.”
Student-athletes had an opportunity to voice their concerns and vent about their current situations. McLean plans to make these meetings weekly to assure that the student-athletes’ mental health remains strong and that they know that they are still all a part of the Trinity Athletics family.
“We had wonderful conversations and the energy was extremely positive. It was nice to see familiar faces and the excitement was surprisingly overwhelming. We discussed Covid-19 and the precautions that we are taking to keep ourselves and our families safe. It hasn’t been easy, but we are all invested in getting through this together,” says McLean.
The student-athletes were also updated on fall registration, returning resident room selection, and resources that are still available virtually.
