Association of Division III Independents Names 2016 All-Independent Softball Teams

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Maranatha Baptist University shortstop Emily Boogher and Nebraska Wesleyan University pitcher Marisa Garver earned top honors on the 2016 All- Independent Softball teams named today by the Association of Division III Independents.

Boogher, a senior from York, Pennsylvania, was named the Player of the Year after leading AD3I in batting average (.448) and on base percentage (.519). The shortstop posted 19 RBI in 24 games with 17 runs scored and ten doubles in 67 at bats.

Garver, a senior from Lincoln, Nebraska, was named the Pitcher of the Year for the second year in a row after she went 14-8 with a 2.25 ERA in 140 innings pitched. Garver tossed 15 complete games and struck out 35 batters on the year, while giving up only 45 earned runs in 2016.

Pine Manor College catcher/pitcher Ashley Huber was named the Rookie of the Year. The freshman batted an impressive .429 on the year (No. 2 in AD3I) with 31 runs scored (No. 2 in AD3I) and an Association-best 30 RBI in 27 games for the Gators. The freshman also led AD3I with nine home runs and earned three wins in the circle.

Nebraska Wesleyan University head coach Mary Yori and University of Maine-Presque Isle head coach Sara Shaw were named AD3I Co-Coaches of the Year. Yori led the Prairie Wolves to a 21-19 mark and an appearance in the GPAC Tournament. Shaw guided the Owls to an Association-best 25-15 record and a spot in the USCAA National Tournament.

The Association of Division III Independents consists of nine Division III independent institutions that have joined together to recognize student-athletes at independent institutions, and to provide exempted postseason championship competition. The Association recognizes outstanding athletic achievements of its student-athletes on a weekly, monthly and annual basis. The Association provides statistical services for its members in seven sports. In addition, it will announce All-Independent teams at the conclusion of eight other sports this year.
